Lower Manitou Lake Largemouth Bass Fishing

The Lower Manitou system and a couple of our portage lakes have a small population of Largemouth Bass roaming the waters. On the main lake you will find them held up mainly in Holcroft Bay. You will also find them on 3 of our portage lakes that are located within a few minute's boat ride of the camp.

We fish for Largemouth Bass in many of the same ways as we do for our Smallmouth Bass, most of the patterns and lures are the same. The only thing we do different for the Largemouth Bass is fishing them Texas rigged style with a plastic worm just after the spawn until late summer.

Ontario Largemouth Bass Fishing

Largemouth Bass are not as common as they are down south and because of the cooler water and shorter growing season, they take much longer to grow. A 5-pound Largemouth Bass in Northern Ontario is twice the age of a 5-pound bass caught in the southern states. There is one advantage our bass have. In the cool clean waters of Ontario, Largemouth Bass are more aggressive and fight a lot harder. The cooler water also means our Largemouth Bass do not have the parasites that southern bass have so they are surprisingly good to eat. Many people can't tell the difference between fresh bass and fresh Walleye. Because our population is concentrated in a few areas and the lake only has a couple of hotspots, we ask that our guests let all Largemouth Bass go. That's never been an issue as most bass fisherpersons are catch-&-release anyway.
