Lower Manitou Lake Lunker Lake Trout Fishing

Lower Manitou Lake is very well known by the locals as one of the best Lake Trout Lakes in all of Northwestern Ontario. You will find lots of shorelunch size Lakers all the way up to wall-hangers. In the spring you can catch trout right off the island and many of the best spring spots on the lake are within 5 minutes of the camp.

Early in the season, from Ice out until late May you will find the trout in 10-30ft. of water. Many of the early season fishing spots are within site of the main camp. You can catch trout early in the year by simply trolling shorelines with crankbaits, spoons, Mepps, or by simply dead bait rigging off shore.

Ontario Lake Trout Fishing

Trout will start to head down in what we call the transition period and this takes place usually in June. You will find them in 30-60 ft. of water as the water starts to warm up. During the transition phase, we will jig for them with 1oz. saltwater jigs and white glow tubes. You can also run 3-way swivel rigs or shallow down riggers with various lures on the end.

In July and August you will find trout in what we call their summer trout holes and the depths tend to run 60-100ft. of water. When the trout are in their summer patterns we use the same techniques as we do in the transition phase, we just adjust them for the deeper water.

Ontario Lake Trout Fishing

In September the water is starting to cool and usually by the end of the month you can catch trout in 15-30ft. of water as they are getting ready to spawn.

The Lake Trout on Lower Manitou Lake average from 3-7lbs, but you will find plenty of 10-15lbs. being caught each year and every once in awhile a 20lbs.+ is reported being caught.
